What is hand block and batik printing?
Hand block printing is one of the oldest ways of printing fabric. A design is carved into a wooden block, the block is dipped in colour and then pressed onto the fabric by hand, one impression at a time. A design with several colours usually needs a separate block for each colour, lined up by eye as the printer works along the fabric.
Batik is a wax-resist technique. Wax is applied to the parts of the fabric that should stay undyed, the fabric is dyed, and the wax is then removed. The covered areas keep their original colour, and fine cracks in the wax can let thin lines of dye through, a look that is typical of a batik print cotton saree.
Both methods suit sarees as well as hand block print kurti fabric and batik print dress material. Because every impression and every wax line is made by hand, slight variation between pieces is normal. Small differences in colour or placement are part of the handmade character, not a defect.
