What is bandhani?
Bandhani, also known as bandhej, is a tie-and-dye technique. Before the fabric is dyed, small points of it are pinched and tied tightly with thread, often in hundreds of places across a single piece.
The tied points resist the dye. When the threads are removed after dyeing, each point leaves a small undyed dot, and together the dots form patterns such as lines, waves and flowers. The fabric can be tied and dyed more than once to build up several colours, which is how a bandhej saree can carry dots in more than one shade.
Because every dot is tied by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike. Small differences in the size and spacing of the dots are part of the character of bandhani.
The dot patterns can cover the whole fabric or be kept to the border and pallu of a saree, and the same technique is used on dupattas, kurti fabric and dress material.
