What is embroidery handwork?
Embroidery handwork means decorating fabric by stitching a design onto it by hand, using a needle and thread. Stitches such as running stitch, chain stitch and satin stitch can outline a motif, fill it with colour or add raised texture to the surface of the cloth. The thread can be cotton, silk or metallic, and some styles add small mirrors, sequins or beads to the stitching.
On a hand embroidery saree, the work is often placed along the border and pallu, or spread across the fabric as small repeating motifs. On kurtis and dress material it is commonly used around necklines, sleeves and yokes.
Because each piece is stitched by hand, small variations between pieces are normal. The stitching adds texture and detail that sits on top of the fabric rather than being printed into it.
